An ankle sprain is an injury causing over-stretching or tears to ligaments around the ankle, that is caused by an un-natural twisting or force to the foot. Ligaments are made of tough fibrous tissue and therefore take longer than muscles to heal.
The treatment of sprains depends on the extent of injury and whether the sprain is acute, chronic or re-current. The podiatrist will also look at any underlying factors that may have led to the injury and do a biomechanical examination and gait analysis. With ankle sprains treatment sooner rather than later is beneficial as an untreated ankle sprain may lead to chronic ankle instability, a condition marked by persistent discomfort and a “giving way” of the ankle. Rehabilitation of a sprained ankle needs to begin right away. If rehabilitation is delayed, the injury may be less likely to heal properly. If ankle sprains are recurrent or there is resultant ankle instability custom made orthotics are often beneficial.
Also known as Achilles tendonopathy this condition is a painful and often debilitating condition of the Achilles tendon (the tendon from the calf that inserts into the heel bone). Signs of acute Achilles tendonitis are pain at the onset of exercise that subsides after rest. In chronic cases the pain is present all the time and is made worse by climbing stairs and doing exercise. Healing of the Achilles tendon is often slow due to its poor blood supply.
The podiatrist will look at the cause of the injury and give advice on treatment and prevention of re-occurrence. They will take into account factors such as footwear, training schedule, calf muscle weakness and any underlying biomechanical factors. Underlying biomechanical factors may be treated with custom made orthotics.
