Podiatry and Shin splints

Shin splints—also known as medial tibial stress syndrome—are a common overuse injury that causes pain along the front or inner edge of the shinbone. Podiatry plays an important role in both the treatment and prevention of shin splints by addressing the underlying causes rather than just the symptoms. A podiatrist will assess your foot structure, walking and running mechanics, and footwear to identify contributing factors such as flat feet, overpronation, poor biomechanics, or inadequate support.

Treatment may include custom orthotics to improve foot alignment and reduce strain on the lower legs, footwear advice to ensure proper support and cushioning, and tailored rehabilitation programs. These programs often involve stretching and strengthening exercises to improve muscle balance and flexibility, reducing stress on the shinbone.

By targeting the root causes, podiatry care not only relieves pain but also enhances overall lower limb function and performance.
