Podiatry and Bunions
Podiatrists are well placed to treat bunions because they specialise in the structure, function, and biomechanics of the feet. A bunion develops when the big toe joint becomes misaligned, often due to abnormal foot mechanics, footwear choices, genetics, or joint instability. Podiatrists assess walking patterns, joint mobility, and weight distribution to identify the underlying causes contributing to the deformity and pain. Treatment may include footwear advice, padding and taping to reduce pressure, custom orthotics to improve foot alignment, and exercises to strengthen supporting muscles and maintain joint mobility. By addressing both symptoms and biomechanical factors, podiatry care can reduce pain, slow progression, and improve comfort during daily activities. In more advanced cases, podiatrists can also advise on surgical options and provide pre- and post-operative care to support optimal recovery.
